Prime Minister Imran Khan is going to announce price cuts on essential commodities when his federal cabinet meets on Tuesday.
“I understand the difficulties ordinary people, including salaried class, are confronting and have decided, come what may, my government will be announcing various measures that will be taken to reduce prices of basic food items for the common man in Cabinet on Tuesday,” he tweeted.
The Prime Minister said at the same time all the relevant government agencies had launched an in-depth probe into the flour and sugar price hike. “The nation should rest assured that all those responsible will be held accountable and penalised,” Khan remarked. Separately, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Information and Broadcasting Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan said on Sunday Prime Minister Khan was honouring all his promises and political commitments made during his election campaign.
Addressing a press conference in Sialkot, she said Khan’s struggle against the corrupt system and corrupt elements had now entered into the final phase and his dream of a corruption-free Pakistan would come true soon. Dr Awan said a status quo had been maintained in the country for the last 72 years. The corrupt politicians used the law for their personal gains in the past, she said, adding: “No one is above the law in the ‘New Pakistan’.”
She said those who had made assets through unfair means would have to face accountability and added there were many challenges being faced by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government to bring about reforms in the system.
The special assistant said the accountability of corrupt politicians was continuing and no undue relief was being given to the corrupt elements. She said the government was committed to recovering every single penny plundered by the corrupt politicians.
She also said the government was aware of the nexus between the corrupt, who attempted to create flour and sugar crisis in the country. “This nexus will be broken soon… the corrupt used their ill-gotten money for creating shortage of flour and sugar in the country,” she added.
“People believe in honesty and sincerity of Prime Minister Khan, who is the only true, honest and sincere leader of Pakistan,” she said, adding: “Pakistan is successfully moving ahead towards the goal of national economic and political stability.”
Responding to the Prime Minister’s tweet on inflation, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb said on Sunday now only Prime Minister Khan’s resignation would provide relief to the nation.
The PML-N leader said if the Prime Minister wanted to serve the masses, he should hold search operation in the mills of his companions. “You [Khan] are creating difficulties for the people by increasing inflation with the assistance of sugar and flour mafias,” she alleged.
